Why See a Dermatologist?

Dermatologists are doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disease of the hair, skin, nails, and mucous membranes (inside of the nose, mouth, and eyelids). Dermatologists are trained to treat many different rare and common conditions. Some of the most frequent reasons patients see a dermatologist include acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer. In addition to caring for disease of the skin, dermatologists can help improve the appearance of skin in many ways including fighting signs of aging and improving the appearance of scars.

Quality, Specialized Care for Hair, Skin, and Nails

While other doctors and health professionals can claim to be experts in skin disease, only doctors with specific training and certification can call themselves board-certified dermatologists. To become a board-certified dermatologist, a doctor must successfully complete:

  1.  A bachelor’s degree.
  2.  Medical school.
  3.  One year internship of required general medical training.
  4.  A dermatology residency program, usually 3 years.
  5.  An exam given by the American Board of Dermatology.
  6.  Ongoing educational requirements.

Similarly, a board-certified dermatopathologist undergoes the above training with an additional specialized training year called a fellowship in dermatopathology, followed by another exam administered by the American Boards of Dermatology and Pathology.
